The Buick Skylark is an iconic nameplate that was produced from 1953 to 1998. Originally launched as an exclusive luxury convertible, the Skylark symbolized Buick's dedication to innovation, style, and high performance during the muscle car craze of the 1960s and early 1970s. The 1953 Skylark was a limited-production, upscale convertible designed by General Motors stylist Harley Earl and constructed on the Buick Roadmaster platform. After a brief break, the Skylark returned in 1961 as a compact model, eventually growing into a mid-sized vehicle. Buick began selling powerful V8 engines in the mid-1960s, establishing the Skylark as a genuine contender in the muscle car arena.
The 1964 model introduced a 300 cubic-inch V8 engine option, while the sportier Gran Sport (GS) version appeared with a strengthened suspension and a powerful 401 cubic-inch "Wildcat 445" V8, known for its remarkable 445 lb-ft of torque. The Skylark was completely redesigned in 1968 to remain competitive, with body lines and muscular curves alongside a variety of powerful engine options. The Gran Sport 455, launched in 1970, stood out with its 455 cubic-inch V8, which produced up to 360 horsepower and 510 lb-ft of torque. The Skylark remained in production until 1998 when it was discontinued and replaced by newer models in the brand's growing lineup.
