The GMC Typhoon, an SUV produced by GMC between 1992 and 1993, was constructed on the same platform as the GMC Jimmy. It featured a turbocharged V6 engine and was paired with a four-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive system, allowing the Typhoon to accelerate quickly. The engine drew its design from the GMC Syclone pickup truck, which features a Mitsubishi turbocharger and a Garrett intercooler to maximize power output. Its handling qualities were significantly superior to those of typical SUVs, making it exceptionally agile on winding roads.
The Typhoon's exterior design was remarkable, with a low profile, distinct body cladding, and eye-catching color options. Its interior was well-appointed for the period, with leather upholstery, air conditioning, a premium sound system, and power windows and locks. The sport-tuned suspension gave exceptional tuning performance, and the car had minimal body roll, allowing for confident handling through corners. With only roughly 4,600 units made over a two-year period, the Typhoon's scarcity and groundbreaking performance have catapulted it to collector status. Recognized as a pioneer in performance-oriented SUVs, it established the groundwork for today's high-performance options from prestigious brands such as Mercedes-AMG, Porsche, and BMW M.
