1980s

The Pontiac Fiero, produced by General Motors' Pontiac division from 1984 to 1988, was the first two-seater sports car and the first mass-produced mid-engine sports car by an American manufacturer. The Fiero was first intended to be an affordable commuter vehicle with sporty styling and handling. However, the mid-engine configuration was selected to offer balanced weight distribution, which improved handling qualities. Key features included a mid-engine layout, space frame construction, and aerodynamic design to improve fuel efficiency.

The Fiero was available with various engine options, including a 2.5-liter Iron Duke Inline-Four and a 2.8-liter V6, and various transmission options. The mid-engine layout and suspension setup provided a sporty and responsive driving experience. The Fiero range included the entry-level Fiero Coupe, the more aggressive Fiero SE, and the performance-oriented Fiero GT, each with a distinct engine and set of special features. GM's internal restructuring and poor sales caused the Fiero's discontinuation, and it was succeeded by the Pontiac Solstice.
