The Pontiac Grand Prix, a classic American car produced by Pontiac, was in production from 1962 to 2008. It started out as a full-size luxury coupe with sporty elements and evolved into a midsize and later full-size sedan. The first generation of the Grand Prix featured a performance-oriented focus with added luxury features. The early models had unique stylistic cues, including sloping rooflines, signature split grilles, and wide tracks. The 1969 Grand Prix saw a major shift as it moved to GM's new G-body platform, emphasizing its sporty character through its lighter, smaller, and more performance-focused design.
The Grand Prix was redesigned in 1973, growing larger and heavier with an emphasis on comfort and style. By 1978, the Grand Prix had downsized to GM's new A-body platform, reflecting a shift in consumer demand towards smaller, more fuel-efficient cars. The vehicle transitioned to front-wheel drive and became a mid-size sedan in the 1980s, moving away from its muscle car roots to focus on more practicality and affordability. The 1990s saw a performance revival with the introduction of supercharged V6 engines, bringing back some of the power and performance lost in previous decades. The final generation of the Grand Prix remained in production until 2008 when it was replaced by the Pontiac G8.
